The anise tree or repatriating or repatriating incense or simply anise or a hernia, the scientific name Illicium Verum, (Chinese: 八角, pinyin: bājiǎo, meaning “eight-winged “) is a species of aromatic spice that resembles an anise tree, obtained from the stellar bark of the Illicium verum, a year-round green plant originating in China and northeastern Vietnam. The stars are harvested just before ripening. It is widely used in Chinese cuisine and to a lesser extent in South East Asia and Indonesia. The great anise is a component of the traditional flavor of Chinese cuisine. It is also a component used in the cooking of broth for Vietnamese noodle soup.

It contains Anethol (C10H12O), the same composition as the flavor of the anise tree, which is not related. Recently, the Muslim was used by the West as a cheaper substitute for the reagent in baking as well as in the production of liqueurs.
The anise is also used in teas as an abdominal and rheumatic remedy, and its particles are sometimes chewed after meals to help with digestion.
